/ AMERICAN APPAREL

IZZY TUASON
Graduate student in Boston and blogger (www.thedandyproject.com)

I have my hair parted and immaculately slicked-back a la Cary Grant, and I’m wearing a black one-button skinny blazer from TOPMAN, the AMERICAN APPAREL big tank in nude, a long black lambskin ANN DEMEULEMEESYER Spring 2010 necklace that’s supposed to look like thorns, a black rubber CASIO watch, MARTIN MARGIELA bent nail ring, CHEAP MONDAY black skinnies and black vintage cap-toed laceups. I spritzed a bit of TERRE D’HERMES to evoke that dark and debonaire feel.

I’m wearing this to check out a friend’s new place and then go out for drinks after.

I slept with damp hair last night, which has left it a little scraggly and mis-shapen, wavy strands fall messily on my face. I’m due for a trim and I’ve been eyeing the local hair dresser I pass by every morning. 11 euro for all lengths. I have on a basic V neck t-shirt from SES, a chain store based in Australia. I packed it as one of my basics, assuming it would be worn frequently. On closer inspection there are slight streaks of blue stains, the inevitable result of mixing whites with your colours. The weather is warm enough to wear an old pair of mineral wash AMERICAN APPAREL natural denim runner shorts – in cornflower blue. But since the cool breeze from last night’s first summer storm still lingers, I’ve put on my wooly winter reindeer boots, bought from Big W. Around my neck is a gold necklace with a crucifix pendant – a present my mother gave me before I left home. Every time we speak on skype she comments on how lovely it looks. She insists I never take it off, and I never have.

BARBARA FRANKIE RYAN
I make a zine in my bedroom called BFR. It’s all hand drawn and then photocopied in the school library. Most of my time is spent on London public transport, getting home from lame house parties in zone 6 or just rifling around.

I am wearing low NIKE dunks that I got when I was 12 years old, they are very pink and grubby having served me six years of physical education and some little socks that I took from my Mum’s draw this morning. I’m also wearing some greenish coloured drainpipes back from when I used to think nu rave was like the best thing everrr. Oddly clothes from when I was 13 still fit me. Then I’m wearing a standard AMERICAN APPAREL tri-blend male tank with a blue, red and green UNIQLO (again from the mens section) tartan shirt on top. Over that I’ve stolen my Dad’s MARKS & SPENCER cardigan, its super big and soft and navy. My mum bought it for him when we were at the seaside because he was cold, but he didn’t like the plastic buttons, so she has sewn on some rather dashing cork ones as a replacement. Unfortunately the moths are getting to it. My hair is an utter state as usual, but it’s down today because I went to a ball last night and pretty much rolled out of bed and into the library (for revision) and I couldn’t be bothered to sort it out because it’s rainy today. On my face, I have both my lobes pierced which are adorned with VIVIENNE WESTWOOD orb earrings and I have my cartilage pierced on the top of my right ear which has a ring in it. Because I am rather blind, I am wearing orange glasses and shit loads of eyeliner. I also have by MARC by MARC JACOBS school bag with me, it is oil cloth and has lots of funny drawings on it like a banana eating itself and a huge zip and a MARC JACOBS bone bangle (on my left wrist) and a TIMEX watch (on my right wrist).

From head to toe: A light splash of Bumble & Bumble ’straight’ potion for my unruly locks. A dash of DIOR homme aftershave. Thin cotton vintage blossom style print shirt by PAUL AND JOE, with cream landscape, blue tree trunks and pink blossom, from Selfridges London. Pure lambswool Cardigan by PETER JENSEN in wine color. Round neck cut with no fastenings on front, bought from sample sale at Peter’s studio. Vintage CASIO gold calculator watch. Slim fit dark denim jeans by UNIQLO with 1inch turn up. Perfect fit for my overly long legs and slim waist. All underwear by AMERICAN APPAREL in maroon bought from the LA flagship store in down town LA whilst on vacation last autumn. Vintage Chelsea boots bought from a flea market in Paris. Slightly scuffed and worn leather just as I like them.

I always wear my perspex 50’s cats eye glasses from OPERA OPERA. They’re falling apart a bit now, but I’m pretty blind so I couldn’t do without them. Today I’m also wearing a high-waisted denim skirt that was ankle length, and kind of amazing like that but i chopped it to knee length – originally from BHS but bought from a charity shop in Stroud last week. A black t-shirt with white horses running across from a thrift shop in Houston, Texas. High-waisted leggings from AMERICAN APPAREL which have a huge hole in them half way down the right leg that I’ve been meaning to sew up for almost a year. Grey socks from M&S, my favourite brown sandals i bought at a charity shop in Brighton. A teddy girl style camel jacket from a charity shop in Surbiton, originally M&S, and a yellow desert backpack i bought on the same day from an army surplus near by. I can’t take it off at the moment, everyone should have a good backpack. Perfume: Coco Madamoiselle. I also always wear a small gold hoop in my left ear (my friend in Manchester has the other) and a heart shaped locket that my sister gave me for my 18th birthday – there’s room for 4 pictures, but im still looking for people with small enough heads.

Brand new black slip-on brogues straight out of the box – I’m wearing them in. Black skinny jeans and a black cropped vest with parrots on it. I love the difficult line between ugly/beautiful/garish/easy-on-the-eye. I’m in my studio and it’s freezing so I’m also wearing an old oversize LEVIS denim jacket and an AMERICAN APPAREL hoodie with a badge on it which has gone rusty in the wash. My socks have got cat hair on them from the beasts who live on the floor. I always loose accessories so I’m not wearing any right now.

Today I’m wearing MISTER HOLLYWOOD’S black tuxedo collar coat from 09/10 AW collection. I bought this coat when I was on a photo shoot for this magazine (Can’t say which because its not released yet) with Lucas Ossendrijver, LANVIN men’s wear designer. During the shoot we went to MISTER HOLLYWOOD in Harajuku. The brand is also known as N. HOLLYWOOD. This coat caught my attention right when I walked in the store, I tired it on and it was perfect. There isn’t that many opportunities to be shopping with Lucas so I asked him if it looks good or not and he said “it looks very nice” with a smile…. I bought it right away! Underneath I’m wearing UNIQLO dark grey v neck sweater, AMERICAN APPAREL v neck t shirt in white. Recently it has been very cold in Tokyo and I can’t go outside without wearing UNIQLO men’s HEATTECH tights and over that black DIOR HOMME jeans. Very sharp boots by GIANNI BARBATO in black. Knitted black neck warmer by H&M. PRADA studded black leather wallet and iPhone in my pockets. Also Ricoh GR II digital camera.
